T-Lectual - Shrink Interrupted (featuring remix by Slighter, Sam Ball) (Polytechnic Recordings)
Release Date: November 11th, 2008
Reviewed: 3.5/5
User Rating: 3.7/5

Officials working at the Guiness Book of World Records should be keeping an eye on Denver, as it seems Polytechnic Recordings may be after setting a new record for releasing the most EP's over a six-month span. The relatively new label has had it's fair share of highs and lows in it's first full year, and their latest offering from T-Lectual stays true to their inconsistent nature. This is "T-Lectual - Shrink Interrupted."

Polytechnic did one thing right with this release, by signing Sam Ball on for remix duties. Sam is undoubtedly one of the hottest, and most sought-after remixers in the industry right now, and he shows exactly why with this remix. With his stunning rework of Shrink Interrupted, Sam Ball displays Godlike attributes, pulling off a "water into wine" miracle, that nobody could have expected. This is signature Sam Ball material, boasting a serious progressive groove, while utilizing strong techno-infused synth lines and basslines to provoke complete dancefloor mayhem and anarchy from start to finish. Considering what we had to work with from the onset, Sam deserves a gold medal for pulling off one of the most impressive remixes of the year.

T-Lectual's original pales in comparison to the Sam Ball remix, as it sounds dated, cluttered, and downright cheesy at times. Breakdowns are generally used to build the energy and storyline of a track, but not here. The breakdowns and buildup basically just causes more disinterest, with the use of generally lame vocal bits that sound like they were snipped from a Tylenol commercial.

The Slighter remix definitely makes better use of those samples, drowning them out and sitting them toward the back of the mix, while adding washy pads and chords on top of a tight broken-beat groove. By no means is this a big hit remix, but it deserves some play by those into breaks.

Sam Ball's remix is good enough to completely outweigh the shortcomings of the other two mixes in this release. While I applaud Polytechnic for bringing Sam on to this release, I certainly hope the focus of this label moves more in the direction of finding top-notch original music, rather than using the talent and reputation of high profile remixers to breathe life into otherwise sub-par productions. If Sam can pull off miracles like this, could we expect Sam Ball for president in 2012?!

"Sam Ball is one of my favorite producers and his remix of T-Lectual is one of my top tunes of 2008 so far. I must have dropped this in 2 of my radio shows and 4 of my live gigs by now. Just never get tired of this one. Original mix lacks the tightness of Sam's remix. Lot of good ideas but not enough of a hook or real sense of momentum. Slighter remix is good for the breaks heads. Good for building up a set." - 4.0 / 5
